Today a PI showed up at my Parents house looking for me about a customer of mine (I share a PO Box with my father for our businesses). I have run a small web development and Hosting company since 2003. He told my Father they have one of my customers for Burglary and theft but they were going after him in civil court. He said he represents a direct competitor of my customer and wanted to talk to me about stolen email addresses because I host his websites and my customers Ex-Girlfriend mentioned my name in a deposition. (turns out she is now the ex-girlfriend of the guy suing my customer)
My dad called and told me about it and gave me the contact info for the PI. I called him awhile ago and told him I have known him(customer) for about 4 years and I generally only see him once a month if that when he pays his bill. He has been all around great customer. Well he wants to come to my house and discuss this Wens for a half hour or so. My fear is I am a small business and if I give up any company info I can be sued. Its not like a court has ordered me to talk to this guy. If you ask me him saying "they have him for burglary and theft but we are going after him in civil court" left me wondering if he (PI) just didnt get himself in trouble. I am inclined to call him in the am and advise him this has no bearing on me and I can't discuss my customers without some sort of court order. Am I wrong for feeling this way?? My wife fears that it will cast bad light on me but I honestly feel it is the right thing to do. Seriously it feels like they filed paperwork to sue and are now on a fishing expedition Sometimes I question how much longer I am going to keep the Hosting biz going LOL. I get threating email everyday from someone pissed off at any one of my customers but this one takes the cake.
