I think this is what we ended up with after the last round of discussions:

^[a-zA-Z]([.]?([[:alnum:]_-]+)*)?@([[:alnum:]\-_]+\.)+[a-zA-Z]{2,4}$

It's in my notes, and is very similar to what I'm using (which is a 
somewhat less efficient version of this).  I've not updated under the 
"ain't broke, don't fix" theory of life.

Anyway, I can't guarantee it's bulletproof, but it should be pretty good.
