We host about 10 sites with similar browser stats to kaigler. The primary visitors
are 35-45 year male and females.
A few of our other "younger" sites are about 90% - 800x600, 2% - 640x480, and the
remainder - 1024x768 or something else.
You should look for a stat program that checks client OS/browser resolution.. One
that we have been using can be found at browserhawk.com. Although you could write
your own javascript function for this, BrowserHawk (or other component) can easily
give you other client properties like connection speed, window size, scripting
capabilities, cookie detection, and plug-in detection. There's also a custom tag at
Allaire's gallery that checks browser info, I think it's called CF_browser.
As for "graceful degradation," using tables can be convenient. Set the cell and/or
table widths to use percentages instead of set pixel widths.
I hope this helps.

Is 800x600 the default design resolution these days?
Any thoughts on graceful degradation from 800x600 to 640x480?
Any way of telling browser resolution?
Thanks for any insight,
Bill
