if you are running Windows, you can probably do whatever you need using CDO
(buy ASP professional, wrox press). AFAIK you can also connect to OLE-DB
data stores using ADO 2.5, though I've never tried to do this.
It might be worth considering ASP for this part of your Intranet project.
