Several applications within Bcentral were "acquired" by Microsoft. Link
Exchange bought this company from New Hampshire (Submit-It?). They had
developed several CF applications such as the "Submit It" tool to submit
your site to multiple search engines and "Position Agent" which checked your
sites' rankings for specific keywords on search engines.
Shortly after this acquisition Microsoft bought Link Exchange.
While it is possible that Microsoft is running CF my theory is that they
have configured their servers to handle .cfm as .asp or some other format.
The sites acquired by Microsoft obviously have been around 3 or 4 years and
will have thousands of links to .cfm pages. I'm pretty sure that for
example "Submit It" and "Position Agent" both had affiliate programs. The
links from these programs would have gone to .cfm pages. It would be easier
to map .cfm as an active server page than to get thousands of affiliates to
change their link codes :)
Just a theory though!
