We ran into this exact problem yesterday. We're running Windows NT 4.0,
IIS, and CF 4.5.1 SP2. Yesterday afternoon, under heavy (althoug not
excessive) load, ColdFusion's processor usage spiked to 100% on one of our
servers. We stopped and restarted the ColdFusion services, but as soon as
the ColdFusion Application Server service was restarted, it went back to
100%. We tried this quite a few times to no avail.
One of our system admins recommended checking the mail spool directory. The
spool directory contained two very short messages to be sent, but the
spool.ini file listed eight or nine files it was trying to send. So we
cleared all of these out, and that *appeared* to fix the problem.
(Processor usage seemed to go down right after we cleared out the mail
spool, but I don't know if those two were correlated or not.)
According to our Allaire support engineer, there is a known bug when trying
to send a 0-byte e-mail message: it will cause problems like what we saw.
This is scheduled to be fixed in ColdFusion 5.0.
Any other suggestions, for the original problem or ours?
Thanks,
Ryan
