I think you provided a very good general description.

I don't think there's anything inherently unsafe about Active Directory.
It's essentially the replacement for the NT domain architecture, that's all.

Using Win98 is a gaping security hole, all by itself. NetBEUI isn't a
security problem itself, necessarily, although you're better off not using
it if you can avoid it. I haven't worked with Windows 98 in a work
environment for quite some time, but my guess is that if you ran a WINS
server, and the Win2K servers were registered within WINS, you wouldn't need
NetBEUI on the Win98 boxes for them to see the Win2K boxes.
