You can still keep IIS on the front end side, and just use apache on the CF
servers instead of the internal web server.  

And yea, these kind of set up are difficult and you have to innovate
yourself as it's sort of unexplored territory and there are no good articles
on it.  It took me months to originally set up this configuration.
