Indeed, when we ever had Mem issues, the first approach was get more RAM. As noted, ColdFusion is told to use 512mb of RAM out of the box - ColdFusion can only address 2GB of RAM so we always go for 4GB - the rest for the OS.
We don't just change the mem setting to 2GB and expect it to work brilliantly - we usually run a variety of Memory management visualisations using VisualGC to find out just how much RAM is being used/needed.
