Larry,
If you have an internet site (vs an intranet site), you'll want to use a
Verisign or Thawte. MS Certificate Server is made for larger organizations
that need/want to verify the validity of clients and/or servers. A Verisign
or Thawte Server is a third party that verifies the validity of your
certificate for your customers, letting them know that your site is
"secure".
Think of it this way. When you request a document over SSL, the server
sends it's certificate to your browser, depending on who the certificate is
from your browser will then send that certificate to the third party who
manages certificates, in our example Verisign or Thawte. On the other hand,
if you rolled your own certificate, essentially your server would send a
cert to the client, and the client would then query YOUR server, asking the
server if it really is who it says it is. "Well of course I am who I say I
am!"

What (if anything) is the advantage of buying a certificate from verisign vs
serving up your own with M$ certificate server?
