You can also use 'dig' and a few other *nix commands to find out the owner
of an IP address even if it doesn't resolve to a name. I would have no idea
how to do this in a web app, other than with Perl, or something. Anyway,
like you said, that doesn't always do you much good. Granted that you have
a pretty good chance right now of at least getting the country right, but
what happens one day when the address belongs to AOL and AOL spans 20
countries? whois is only going to give you Virginia.
