Tango has just gotten support for COM objects (within the last two months,
I believe) and no matter what this guy says about the speed of development,
I've heard some things. I doubt that the developer that said this has used
CF extensively, since a lot of the speed apparently comes from snippets. At
the seminar I took, they acted like snippets were Pervasive's invention and
no other product had them. It is definitely not a drag and drop, quick easy
sort of solution. I looked at it last year and decided against it because
of what is probably a minor issue for most, RDS. The server that I had to
connect to had some corruption somewhere and FTP didn't work. RDS got
around the ftp problem. Last I checked, Tango didn't have very good
connectivity to remote servers. I complained to a Pervasive employee a year
ago, so I don't know what's become of that. I am under the impression that
the Pervasive website is mostly written in things other than Tango. Their
knowledge base had to be updated recently and it was decided by the company
that it would be faster to have their html/javascript coder modify the ASP
code than to redo the knowledge base in Tango. The knowledge base info is
using COM objects, which has just been built in, so until recently ASP was
a good option for them. Take that as you will. Just don't report it back to
Pervasive so my friend doesn't get in trouble for spilling the beans.
I didn't evaluate Tango very extensively because of the RDS problem, but if
you want to evaluate it, I'm sure there's some evaluation dealy on their
site. One of my good friends works for Pervasive and of course, he is going
to say how fabulous the software is no matter what he really thinks of it.
But he is the only person that I know who has ever used it.
Two days ago, I got a call from someone trying to decide between several
packages. He had already ruled out Tango because he was worried about its
longevity. ColdFusion has so many developers that it seemed unlikely to him
that somewhere down the road the product wouldn't be worth supporting. The
number of Tango developers seemed very small to him so he questioned
whether Tango would be around in a few years. But I don't know what
statistics he was drawing from and this may have been his only basis for
ruling out Tango.
That's everything I know. And its probably not very helpful.
