What flavor of 'nix? There are versions of CF for linux and solaris--2 of
the most
popular versions of unix for hosts. Tho' the Linux version isn't widely
available in a hosting environment--yet.
There's also PHP, http://www.php.net , similar to CF and widely supported on
unix
but somewhat steeper learning curve if you're coming from
a non-programming background.

Your best bet is probably some social engineering: point out to your
friend that ColdFusion enabled server space is widely available and that
if you code the site in CF on NT it shouldn't be much trouble to
port it to linux once CF on linux is more widely available.
