Is it reasonable to ask a hosting provider for proof of licensing for server software such as NT, CF server, SQL server, e-commerce applications, mail servers, etc.? Has anyone done this? On the one hand this would seem very intrusive - especially if the host has multiple servers and you insist that they prove they have sufficient licensing for all servers (and cpu's, where applicable). On the other hand, it strikes me that a large host might save tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars by not fully licensing software, with little likelihood of detection. If your site is being hosted by an outside provider in a shared environment what do you feel are your obligations for assuring that "you" are properly abiding licensing agreements?
