My bad, I just remember that it will still error on a zero so it looks like
you are going to have to do something like.

<cfif Val(theChars) AND Val(theChars) GTE 1>
 <cfoutput>#Left(theWord, abs(Val(theChars)))#</cfoutput>
</cfif>
