Actually the original email memorial was for Hornbeck. Hornbeck was a
student and part time network manager for a small school in California. He
left his job but left his account subscribed to a list for Novell
Networking. Unfortunately he had a problem where he kept getting
unsubscribed perhaps due to an unstable mail server. So he set up a chron
job that if it detected that he had been unsubscribed, it would resubscribe
to the list.
Unfortunately his script never took into account that is email account
wouldn't exist. So his system would detect the removal and resubscribe. The
list, an early version of listserv, would send it an email, their mail
server would respond no account exists, back to the list and thousands of
subscribers would get an email and it would start all over again. The
actions generated thousands and thousands of messages per day. It took out
the entire network link at the University of Utah were the list was hosted
and almost crushed the email system at Novell and CompuServe where the
traffic was mirrored.
Finally, network operators at USC drove over to the college and helped the
hapless administrators undue the script. This was back in 1993. Forever
after that, anytime a mail loop was created we always called it a Hornbeck.
You would see a post that would say "Hornbeck is back" or "We have been
Honrbecked".
So here is to Hornbeck, wherever ever he is. Mr. Clay by his actions is just
a pale imitator.
