Try going into Tools>Internet Options>Security>Custom Level  then scroll down until 
you see MicrosoftVM and under that Java
permissions.  If you have Custom or Disable Java clicked, this "could" be your 
problem.  Set to "Low" safety first and then try the
pages again that have the java applets.  Then come back and try higher settings until 
you reach the highest settings that gives you
the results you want.

Hi,

Totally off topic, but maybe somebody here knows what's up - Java applets no
longer appear in my IE.  I've reinstalled IE and have even installed the
newest plugin from javasoft.com, and still can't figure it out.  All applets
just appear as a big empty box with the broken-image icon in the upper-left
corner.  :~(
