I think the root issue though is that since those products are free,
they have no interest in maintaining compatibility with Macromedia.
Macromedia has to keep up with them. That would be the trade-off I
guess, although I'm sure they have thought about this.

The Java JRE can be upgraded whenever you want though. The first thing
I've been doing is upgrade to the newest SUN JRE on my installs.
