I don't let things like a few OT's bother me. I treat it like the occasional SPAM. If I am not interested I don't read it and get on with my day.
The Amber Alert is very important and if you see it on the list then you probable aren't monitoring the Radio, TV, Police Scanners or other mediums that would broadcast it. So I see no problem with it, in fact I think it's a good idea. I don't think it maters that the poster is personally connected. If my child ever comes up missing and I am not here to post I hope someone else does. Rick -----Original Message----- From: Gyrus [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, August 14, 2002 11:51 AM To: CF-Talk Subject: List rules [WAS: OT but Important Amber alert missing child...] OK, just had a big talk about this with my colleague who's a net list veteran, here's the upshot: 1. As list members, we should sort this topic out now, so we (hopefully) don't have to deal with it again. 2. My assumption - without thinking - was that the original poster was somehow personally connected to the missing child. Is this true? 3. My colleague has filled me in on how Usenet communities were often destroyed by increasing volumes of OT posts, and how there are people out there who subscribe to lists on important issues (missing children, product recalls, etc.) who - with good intentions - forward these to any and every list. 4. It's a good comment on this and the other web-related list that I've been on since I started participating in lists that I've never come across this sort of phenomenon. Hence my assumption that the original poster was personally connected to the child in question. 5. Obviously if the original question was: "Can I forward on important OT alerts that I receive and am concerned about in a general way to this list?", the answer should be no - and we should all understand why this isn't callous. 6. Equally obviously, if any of us are unfortunate enough to be personally connected to such a situation, list members would understand if an alert post was made. As I said in my first response to this, I don't know what an Amber alert is - maybe some of the US list members know it's a general alert that would imply no connection on the part of the original poster. What do we all think? Are there any list rules already about this issue, aside from the generic "keep on-topic" rule? I can't find anything on the new House of Fusion site. cheers, - Gyrus ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - [EMAIL PROTECTED] work: http://www.tengai.co.uk play: http://www.norlonto.net - PGP key available ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ______________________________________________________________________ Get the mailserver that powers this list at http://www.coolfusion.com FAQ: http://www.thenetprofits.co.uk/coldfusion/faq Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/index.cfm?sidebar=lists
