1. Duplicate posts - The system is designed to recognize the Unique Message ID of a
post and only record and send a single post out once. If someone sends a post twice,
then it will have 2 different Message IDs and will be recorded and sent twice (once
each). This is the normal issue.
Some people may get a single message more than once. This can be caused by a few
problems. One of them is the HoF server sending the message to someone, the message
being received but no confirmation of receipt being sent back to the HoF server. This
is a rare occurrence that can be caused by network traffic, the mail server 'skipping'
and potentially other things. The reason can be on either side or on the connection
between them.
2. List delays - The list software is set up so that a message is received by the
server, is parsed, recorded into the database and then sent out. As soon as the
message hits the server, its in the archives. After that, its sent to each subscriber.
A mail server tries to connect the mail message from the HoF server to the recipients
mail server through direct connection. If the direct connection fails for various
reasons, the message is cached on the HoF server and tried again later. The try again
rate is set to 1 hour.
If a message is sent to the list, is recognized as being recorded in the archives and
takes any amount of time to get to a server that is NOT in an hour increment, then
there is additional issues going on outside of the HoF server.
This may be the recipients mail server or some other issue. In the past month,
earthlink has shown a problem with dealing with mail that has resulted in delays from
time of post to time of receipt.
Because the HoF server is running at 100% CPU during most of the day (when mail is at
its highest) there is a more than likely chance that anyone mentioning problems with
delays and/or duplicate messages is due to the server. An upgrade of the server code
to make it even tighter will be performed tonight. This may involve taking the mail
portion of the server down at one point. The result will be that posts to any list
hosted at House of Fusion will be delayed until the mail server is brought back up.
Any mail sent to me personally will get through but I may not have the time to reply.
Same goes for ICQ communications. I hope that I'll be able to find and deal with any
issue that may be causing list members problems.
I apologize for the inconvenience.
