SVG will have a tough time penetrating...Flash has the install base...even
more so then Microsoft Windows...and that's the pot of gold...not that
guarantees immunity to other techs but it'll take a helluva reason to
warrant the switch in my opinion...

Subject: RE: Flash Rich App Approach = Macromedia?

Talking about SVG, I found today an interesting product made by a german
company (PCX software).
They're developing :
- a SVG Studio, a visual Authoring-Tool solution for SVG Developers,
- a SVG Builder, Homesite(R)-like Editing Tool for SVG Developers.

SVG Studio is VERY similar to Flash Authoring tool : timeline, animations,
libraries, components(!!!)...
Even the look&feel has been taken from Flash.

Release date : september 2002, for 200 to 500.

Might be an interesting product, this is exactly what was missing to SVG to
compete with Flash in the field of vector graphics and animations. ~Flash5
(why Adobe hasn't developed a similar product earlier?)

>From PCX website :
"Typical Areas of SVG where you can use it's full power are
- Interactive Web Presentations
- Offline-Presentations
- Mapping
- Steering of industry machines
- Graphical UI's for any machines like bank-automats
- Mobile Phones (see MobileSVG)
- Exchange Format for various graphic applications "

But, right now, I am not sure that SVG might be a competitor in the field of
Rich Internet App. ~FlashMX
It is really too early for SVG to enter this arena.
The technology isn't (yet?) mature enough (no IDE) and is not (yet?) widely
distributed (SVG viewer plug-in : 2.4Mb!).
It is only starting to take up.

I don't know if we will see one day web app or web site entirely done with
SVG.
And I hope we will see web app entirely done with FlashMX soon
("macromedia.com"?).

PS : sorry, if it is a little off topic ;)

Doesn't WinForms require a large client-side download and install?

As for SVG, yes, we keep an eye on that. It'll be interesting to see what
take up it gets.
