I think that if you're using COM extensively as a middle tier, you'd be
better off using "classic" ASP for your pressentation logic than CF MX. For
that matter, I think you'd be better off in that case using ASP than CF 5.
While CF MX is a terrible COM client, CF 5 isn't so hot, either. There's all
kinds of COM nastiness in CF 5 - memory leaks, casting problems, inability
to fully utilize COM+/MTS, etc.

Unfortunately, there's only so much that they can do. Using COM from Java
strikes me as an "iffy" proposition at best. CF MX relies on a third-party
library, JIntegra, for this functionality. Moving from native code to Java
entailed giving up some functionality in exchange for other functionality; I
think that the tradeoff was well worth it, but CF MX isn't going to be the
best platform for everything, and I don't think it can be.

Matt's attitude on COM may be unpleasant to accept, but I think it's a
realistic attitude. I think it's worth noting that COM is being abandoned by
MS in favor of .NET, which is radically different. COM tools vendors are
frantically rewriting their offerings as .NET assemblies right now. There
are plenty of COBOL applications out there, but that's hardly an endorsement
of using or supporting COBOL for future applications.
