There are full documentation and good forums there. You should start with firing up the ArcIMS administrator to see what services are running, and what AXL files they are using (XML map definitions) -- you need a password to get in there, make sure you have inherited that!. In the AXL files you can see what files/database they are using (most maps use flat-files "shape-files", but it can also use a database server called ArcSDE that sits on top of SQL Server or Oracle (among others)).
