I don't know if you have any options, really, beyond the ones Steve
enumerated. Even when the new version of Office comes out, it's not like
everyone's going to upgrade to it immediately (or even at all).

According to what I've read, Office 11 will use its own XML language as its
native file format, so you could use any tools that can work with XML to
generate Office documents.

No, I don't think so. I think COM is "evaporating" because Microsoft now has
something better.
