I wrote a CustomTag at work to do a nested tree in a select form field. If you want, I'll toss it your way tomorrow (Tuesday) morning when I get to work. You can pass a few things into it, so you can pre-select something farther down in the tree, if you need. It also does the DB queries for you (you pass datasource, tablename, ID field, parentID field into it).
