Consensus? Not sure. However, I'm just beginning to evaluate the Big Faceless Report Generator (http://big.faceless.org/index.jsp), as it's a Java-based PDF generator that lets you used a modified HTML syntax. It integrates with CFMX nicely (and pre-MX incidentally). I seem to remember that Dave Watts at Figleaf was saying before DevCon that one of their developers was doing a session at DevCon on this product. Maybe he (or that developer) could shed some light on their experiences with the product.
