I like using a Flash movie for this sort of thing ... Which may sound kinda
strange, but I think it's nice to have a transparent flash movie that can
periodically check for updates and on a relevant update, play a short sound
and animation. Note however that there is absolutely no flash ( as of yet )
on my web-site asside from the demo for my chat-room app (
http://www.turnkey.to/talkontap ) which plays a small sound when you receive
a whispered message. The chat room is actually a further development of a
"messages" feature in my CMS which allows content authors/providers/editors
to communicate quickly without having to change mediums, i.e. aim, icq,
email or telephone vs. the browser window in front of them.
