You can specify what you want the tag to do - if you specify an outfile,
it creates a new file, but if you don't, it will save any changes back
to the original file.

Yep, that's one of the things we use it for. We have an arts gallery
that uploads HUGE scans, and the tag creates a large and thumbnail
version, stamps the site's URL in the bottom corner, and puts a
watermark of their logo very faintly over the middle.
