I know it was a PITA! We had written a COM object that interfaced with CDONTS for use in another language. So we took advantage of this and wrote our page to do a <CFOBJECT> to our COM object and send the mail that way. If you have CDONTS on the server you are mailing from you can probably interface directly into it.
You may be able to do it even if you have a MAPI client (like Outlook) on the server.
