Gary, Have had similar experiences here with MX CFHTTP as well. To troubleshoot, I constructed a page where I made the CFHTTP request then output the returned variables to the page so I could see what the header looked like, specifically, #cfhttp.header#.
That exercise revealed that external web servers were returning redirects instead of the pages themselves, so I enabled the "redirect" parameter in CFHTTP and it solved the issue for me.
