I've done something like this. I've got a page-based collection and some varying DB-based collections. Depending on the parameters passed, it will add the collections to a list and then use the collection param of cfsearch to display the list. Then you get a nice unified result set with the "custom" being used by each collection to drill down through the data. Keep in mind though that the more collections you add, the slower it gets.
As for the multiple datasource idea from Stephen, I'm not sure.
