I've been reading the discussion from afar, and I'd like to throw my 2cents in.... For what it's worth.
The small company that I work for is a partly run by a community based organization... having said that, we are usually not in a position to spend much money.... We have been partners with a hosting company that host CF5, and have done many projects with it. We also have another company that we deal with that have CFMX.... We have recently been trying to get a communications tool set up but have had trouble with funding....... recently we've gotten the support to build it, but budgets are a big concern. So the BD server free edition seems to cover everything we would need at the moment and answers to our needs financially and technically (coupled with a Linux OS). But I can see that some of what we want to develop in future projects may demand more... but that edition does speak to certain demands. I personally, like most on the lists LOVE CFML. I'm completely concerned with finding the appropriate answer for whatever need we have. I can honestly tell you I've been wishing that we could couple the MX server with FlashCom (which we intend to purchase at a later date) but so far givin our financial place, it's not in the cards. But to sum it all up, I love the technologies that I've worked with.... I presently work with both (or 3 CF5, CFMX and DB) and sincerely love both products. I'd also like to say that while your stance on CF vs .NET is typical of what most of us CFML fans have felt for so long about ASP, it may be time for reconsideration. It's really no longer about CFML vs ASP. Indeed, the .NET framework is MUCH more than just a way to run ASPs. It's akin to Java in scope and depth. There will be things we can leverage in CFML via BlueDragon/.NET in much the same way that CFMX and BlueDragon's implementation on J2EE opened new doors there as well (in ways that many still are just learning). See several articles I did last year and this year before joining New Atlanta showing how to leverage J2EE features (server-side redirects, servlet filters, JSP custom tags, J2EE sessions, and more). Further, ASP.NET is really quite different from ASP. Before dismissing it so readily (as we've all become accustomed to do), it may be worth a little more consideration on its own merits. Finally, integration with ASP.NET doesn't need to be an either/or proposition.
