Sorry guys, I had to leave earlier... Anyway, I tried everything, including what seemed like the obvious solution, Jochem's to use a cfqueryparam with the money datatype, but i still got the same error. Very strange.
I have given up, and am now successfully using the real datatype. thanks to everyone who suggested solutions.
