In addition to what JD has stated, I would say, replication would not be complete when file system is used to store documents which are associated with data sets of a given database, which is deterimental to data integrity. However, I believe at least one element of the downside is that data retrieval of various types of documents may not prove to be that simple nor extremely efficient. And yet, there does seem to exist some way to circumvent that particular problem.
