Perhaps you weren't using as many database connections when you just had CF 5. Both CF 5 and CFMX use connection pooling; they attempt to reuse connections rather than creating new ones. However, if a new request comes in and no connection is available for use, each would have to create a new one. If you're running both, you're more likely to reach ten concurrent connections, I suspect.
