I guess that my concern would be (with going outside of the os) is if you
have lots of software installed that uses this sooner or later you will run
out of that space.

At least if it is in the os you can see that your hard drive is filling up
and you need to get another one.

Yes, yes yes.
Doesn't answer the question though. There is a process in the background
which 
runs off to MM to ask if I'm valid or not every so often. What happens if 
that doesn't/can not occur ?

It shouldn't be taken lightly on a dekstop !

I wouldn't expect MM to support weird combinations of O/S and J2EE.
