The referrers idea is great for something like image protection, where you don't want others to link to your images and "steal bandwidth." The only problem is that it's not too effective at preventing software from being downloaded, as the referrer can be spoofed easily. It makes it more DIFFICULT, but it doesn't prevent it.
I think the CFCONTENT idea sounds like the best one so far.
