Just throwing my experience in: in 4.5 (which we're still stuck on) the scheduler has always run just fine for us. I'm doing so pretty complex stuff with as well (for example running a task one per day that then changes it to once every ten minutes until a series of files is imported then changing back to once per day). It's always done the job. That being said a lot of people have had trouble... but I still suspect that they are in the minority.
