â?owebugsâ?� or one-pixel hidden .gif images so that when a user opens up
the mail message in the preview pane, Outlook tells IE to load that Image,
which in turn tells the spammer that (1) that e-mail address is valid and
(2) that person has read the message. Many spammers make their money not
from selling goods, but from selling lists of known valid e-mail addresses
to other spammers.

On a related, related note: the new Outlook 2003 will disable images from an
external source.
