Michael,
So don't use <author>... use <dc:creator> instead. It'll work just fine, and doesn't have the email address restriction.
In addition, be aware that your <pubDate> is in the wrong format. It needs to be an RFC-822 date... see the feed from my blog if you need an operating example.
