doesn't matter if it's internal or external.  you're still using browsers and web servers, and there just isn't that capability built in (for good reason).

I'm not a networking guy, but we're on a Novell network at work, and they (the network gurus) use something called Zen to push applications out to client's pc's.  I'd think there would be similar apps for other platforms (not sure tho).  

In any event, without some sort of external mechanism like an ActiveX control or the like, you're not going to be able to read/write etc from the web server to a client's pc (not in any way that I can think of, at least).
