Links located in that discussion are of great value. I have an RSS feed for
the lists about to go up and the format is actually rather simple. This site
has an intro article:

The main issue I've found is not creating the XML packet, not formatting it,
not scheduling it. It's making sure that it is accepted by all of the RSS
validators. Personally, I've just said screw it and have followed what the
rules say rather than what the validators say. You'll have to decide what
you want to do in the end, but that's just about the hardest thing to do.
The specific case I refer to is the listing for author. According to the
rules it's a simple text field which should, but does not have to have an
email address. Some validators mark it as invalid without an email address.
I ignore those validators.
