Actually that .udl file trick is handy! I did not know that was doable.  I always have to futz with the connection
string properties.

  nonsense...this is typical from a MS list ;-)

  No matter what they say etc...there are no performance advantages of OLE
  over ODBC.

  Its certainly not outdated....well, no more than DOS!
