Maybe drop to Apache 2.0.47:
At work, we've got an Apache 2.0.47 server running on RH9. As I
recall, it was as simple as installing RH9 (w/o httpd), then Apache
(manually as there was no RPM for RH9), and then MX6.1. MX recognized
Apache with no problems.
