As you are refreshing the parent window the relationship is being destroyed, it no longer has a child, the existing child has become an orphan.
The easiest way to fix it is the zero-width-frame fudge where the parent becomes a 100% wide window in a frameset and then can be refreshed inside the frameset while your controlling _javascript_ is placed in the 0% window which never goes away.
If you can't do frames then it is a lot more difficult....
