We had a strange problem like this once and it turned out to be a bug in the Crystal Report generating pages. The only way we were able to find it was by calling Microsoft where they suggested to use a tool available on their website called ADPlus (I think). It tracks everything and produces a log file which we sent to them for analysis and found out what it was.
