CFLOGIN timing out

This has been mentioned on list in the past and no real answer was ever posted. If page 1 has a CFLOGINUSER on it and logs a user in, going to page 2 should keep the user logged in. correct? That is not the behavior I'm seeing here. application.cfm has a cfapplication tag with session based login storage. page 1 has a CFLOGINUSER, a test to see if the user is logged in and a link to page 2. Page 2 has the same test. Page 1 works without a problem at all. Page 2 never works. The login simply does not exist.
This is on a fresh install of 6.1. Anyone have a clue?
I'm about a minute away from scrapping CFLOGIN, et. al. for good and writing my own.
