software licenses. You just purchase space and power plus bandwidth on a
connection to the Internet from the colo provider.
What you may be looking for is something more along the lines of a "managed"
server or servers, where you lease the use of both the hardware and software.
Colocation is usually less expensive, primarily because you're not paying for
the server management, but keeping both the hardware and the software
functioning properly is then up to you. You'll also need to stay on top of
security issues, and perhaps install and manage a firewall - things that
would be handled for you in a managed arrangement. If you're OK with that
and have the time (or additional personnel) to deal with problems that crop
up, then colocation would work for you.
You can also use a combination of colocation and managed services. Many
colocation providers provide certain services to customers that want to
offload some of the duties. Managed firewall services and managed backups
are most common.

> Right now my sites our hosted on a shared server. I want to move into
sometype of co-location arrangement. I only have a developer editions of
both MS-SQL and ColdFusion MX. Would I need to buy the server software or do
ISP's provide provide the software.
