where the db used cannot be "licensed" to use more than 25 simultaneous

... I don't have a particularly busy server so this seems a pretty serious
stumbling block to using mySQL if you want to stay legal.

CF looks to be still cool, barring anything else popping up in the SPUR, if a
copy of it ever surfaces.

then there is the long-term security update picture to think about :-(

The service provider went on to explain that he does not sell dedicated
servers with Web Edition installed. (I think that brings us full-circle to
your original statement of low end providers using Web Edition.)  He uses Web
Edition solely for shared web hosting.  When you think about it - for a
dedicated server there's not an enormous cost difference in the end.  Under
the SPLA, service providers (must) pay a monthly license fee to MS rather
than a flat, up-front license fee.  That is, you can no longer "buy" a
license if you're providing third-party hosting - whether it's a shared or
dedicated machine.  If you look at the cost of the licensing of Standard
Edition vs. Web Edition relative to the typical cost of dedicated server, it
may not be that big of a deal.

Web Edition is $10 per month, while Standard Edition is $18.  On a Windows
server where the customer may be paying $200 to $500 or more per month, it
may cut into the profit margin a bit, but $8 isn't going to be a deal
breaker.
