I think you just set java.awt.headless=true in the JVM startup params, and it
Just Works.
Failing that, you can run a 'virtual' X session:
Xvfb :2 -screen 0 1280x1024x16 &
and then tell the JVM to use that by setting the DISPLAY enviroment variable
(to ':2') before starting it.
